Abstract
This study focused on the relationship between maternal depression, maternal rearing behavior, and a child¡¯s sociability. 228 children (119 boys and 109 girls) and their mothers comprised the subjects of the study. A number of study variables were collected by means of survey responses from mothers and were analyzed using Pearson correlation coefficient and regression analysis. Our results were as follow: First, maternal depression showed a negative relationship to maternal rearing behavior and a child¡¯s sociability. Maternal rational guidance, limit setting, and affection rearing behavior showed a positive relationship with a child¡¯s social activity, sensitivity, stability, and levels of cooperation. Additionally, maternal responsiveness had a positive relationship with levels of cooperation. Second, rational guidance, limit setting, affection rearing attitudes were seen to play a mediating role in the relationship between maternal depression and a child¡¯s sociability. In conclusion, this study showed that increasing positive maternal rearing behaviors could lead to an enhancement in the levels of sociability amongst children.
